Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has written a letter to Union Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel demanding classical recognition of Odissi music.

The Chief Minister noted in the letter that the Central Government has not yet recognized classical music ‘Odisha’ as old as 200 BC.

Although the history of this group, which has its own tune and rage, is almost 2,000 years old, it still has not been able to claim its national title.

Odissi music is by no means inferior in the use of classical scripts, lyrical methods and advanced grammar.

This music is not inferior in any way, especially to the recognition of classical music.

Despite the central government’s inactive approach to the music, the state has formally attached importance to Odissi to maintain the dignity of the music.

Renowned institutions like Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Center, Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi have promoted Odissi education and raised the standard of music.

In addition, Utkal Sanskrit University, established in the state in the 16th, has given a new horizon to Odissi music.

On the other hand, the artists of Odisha have made a significant contribution to the art culture of the country.

In addition to demonstrating their skills in music, art and culture, Oriya artists have also won national and international awards.

All of this is a matter of pride for the country.

So even though Odissi dance has gained the status of classical dance at the national level, it has not been possible for Odissi music to do so.

The decision was taken by the state cabinet on September 2 to raise the issue with the central government.

The request, therefore, is that it be a long-held dream of the state’s art and music lovers to give classical status to Odissi music with the above issue in mind.
